Frequently Asked Questions (Gold Pricing & BIS Standards)

Essential insights to help Indian consumers buy gold with 100% confidence.

Read All Detailed Guides →

1. How is retail gold jewellery price calculated in India?

The authentic Indian jewellery calculation formula is: [ (Net Gold Weight × Gold Rate/Gram) + Making Charges + Wastage + BIS Hallmarking Fee (₹45) ] + 3% GST. Always deduct stone weight so that gold rates apply strictly to pure net gold.

2. What is the difference between 24K and 22K gold?

24K gold is 99.9% pure bullion gold, which is very soft and suitable for investment coins and bars. 22K gold (BIS 916) contains 91.6% pure gold alloyed with zinc/copper to give the tensile strength required for intricate, durable jewellery.

3. Why must jewellers deduct stone weight from gross weight?

Synthetic stones, cubic zirconia (CZ), and enamel do not have the monetary value of gold. If a 12g necklace has 2g of stones, paying gold price on the full 12g results in significant financial loss. Gold rates must strictly be billed on the 10g net weight.

4. What is the mandatory BIS Hallmarking fee?

Under Central Government Gazette mandate, the statutory BIS laser hallmarking fee is fixed at ₹45.00 (+ GST) per article. It guarantees laser assay testing and assigns a mandatory 6-digit alphanumeric HUID code that can be verified on the official BIS CARE app.

5. How much GST is applicable on gold jewellery purchases?

Under Central Tax law (HSN Code 7113), gold jewellery is subject to 3.0% GST (1.5% CGST + 1.5% SGST), computed on the composite fabrication value of base metal, labour, wastage, and hallmarking.
